Tablescape-Thursday - Königin der Nacht/Selenicereus grandiflorus

It is again Tablescape-Thursday and I want to say thank you to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch, who is the fiendly hostess of this event. For a special occasion it is held tonight in the greenhouse. We will be in distinguished company, that of a queen.

Es ist wieder Tablescape-Thursday und ich möchte meinen Dank an Susan von Between Naps on the Porch aussprechen, die unsere Gastgeberin ist für diese Blog-Party. Aus besonderem Anlass findet er heute Nacht im Gewächshaus statt. Wir werden in vornehmer Gesellschaft sein, nämlich der einer Königin.

In summer the temperatures in our greenhouse rise in highs that only a few plants can stand. One of them is the Queen of the Night (Selenicereus grandiflorus), a cactus, which is famous for its nearly 12 inch large flowers that bloom only one single night. Our plant is over 20 years old, and when it blossoms, we celebrate a little festival.

All bontanical gardens are proud of their specimen and keep their greenhouses open on this night for the visitors. In the botanical garden of Zurich blossomed this year eight blossoms and 500 visitors took the opportunity to experience these nocturnal flower. Since the heyday of temperature and humidity is affected, one can safely say not until late afternoon, if the flowers will open at night or not. A long planning is impossible. The picture shows the buds around 2.00 p.m., still closed, but well developed, so we expected 11 blooms for this night. We start preparing for our little festival.

In unserem Gewächshaus steigen im Sommer die Temperaturen in Bereiche, die nur wenige Pflanzen ertragen. Eine davon ist die Königin der Nacht, ein Schlangenkaktus, der berühmt ist für seine fast 30 cm großen Blüten, die nur eine einzige Nacht blühen. Unser Exemplar ist schon über 20 Jahre alt und wenn es blüht, feiern wir ein kleines Fest.

Da die Blütezeit von Temperatur und Luftfeuchte beeinflusst wird, kann man erst am späten nachmittag sicher sagen, ob sich die Blüten nachts öffnen werden oder nicht. Eine lange Planung ist unmöglich. Das Bild zeigt die Knospen etwa um 14.00 Uhr, noch geschlossen, aber weit entwickelt, so dass wir 11 Blüten für diese Nacht erwarteten. Wir beginnen mit den Vorbereitungen für unser kleines Fest.

The decoration consisted of many small candles lights in blue plastic cups and there will be served Prosecco and appetizers. Here we have 8.00 p.m., the flowers are already open, only the outer tepals have not yet unfolded. The flowers begin to exude their vanilla scent.

Die Königin der Nacht beginnt, ihre Blüten zu öffnen.

Die Dekoration bestand aus vielen kleinen Kerzenlichtern in blauen Kunststoffbechern und es wird Prosecco und kleine Häppchen dazu geben. Hier haben wir schon 20.00 Uhr, die Blüten sind bereits geöffnet, nur der äußere Strahlenkranz hat sich noch nicht entfaltet. Die Blüten beginnen schon, ihren vanilleartigen Duft zu verströmen.

Now it is 11.00 p.m. and outside it has become quite dark. The queen of the night has opened all 11 flowers - the party can begin.

Gibt es eine schönere Tischdekoration?

Nun ist es 23.00 Uhr und draußen ist es ziemlich dunkel geworden. Die Königin der Nacht hat alle 11 Blüten geöffnet - die Party kann beginnen.

The flowers look like fireworks. Some of the candleholder I have attached with clips to the trellis, others I put in wine glasses.

Die Blüten sehen aus wie ein Feuerwerk. Einige der Windlichter habe ich mit Clips an dem Spalier befestigt, andere habe ich in Weingläser gesetzt.

The snacks consist of Riz crackers with cream cheese, cucumber and Lousianna crab meat. Everything is held together by tiny cocktail skewers with rose pattern. Not only because of the unusual flowers, also temperature and humidity give us the idea of a tropical night.

Die Häppchen bestehen aus Riz-Cräckern mit Frischkäse, Gurke und Lousiannakrebsfleisch. Alles wird von winzigen Cocktailspießen mit Rosenmuster zusammengehalten. Nicht nur wegen der ungewöhnlichen Blüten, auch Temperatur und Luftfeuchte geben uns die Vorstellung einer Tropennacht.

While we are drinking Prosecco and eating appetizers, we enjoy the majestic beauty of the flowers.

Während wir Prosecco trinken und die Häppchen essen, genießen wir die Schönheit der majestätischen Blumen.

The next morning the party is over and the blooms of the Queen Of The Night are withered. Only a few individual weaker buds will open the next nights. Then we have to wait, until next year when the Queen Of The Night will opens its flower dream for us again.

Am nächsten Morgen ist die Party vorbei und die Königin der Nacht ist verblüht. Nur noch wenige einzelne schwächere Knospen werden sich die nächsten Nächte öffnen. Dann müssen wir bis nächstes Jahr warten, bis die Königin der Nacht erneut ihren Blütentraum für uns öffnet.
